Belsize Park Gardens

We have transformed this badly neglected property creating a minimal and ascetic space which allows the mind to be calm, still and at peace.

By stripping back the apartment’s fabric to its core walls, floors and ceilings we created a refined and serene background to showcase a library, piano room and the client’s antique furniture collection.

The bespoke kitchen and other joinery are comprised of raw elemental materials such as patinated brass, mild steel, concrete and timber, which like the plaster walls are intended to transform naturally with age.

One of our client’s key aims was to expose the existing plaster walls and retain them as finished surfaces.  While seemingly straightforward this presented us with a number of difficult problems, such as how to deal with the modern plaster surfaces, how to replace the services, and how best to tackle the thresholds between the old and the new.

The existing plaster finishes along with the use of mild steel, patinated brass and concrete brought a degree of uncertainty to the process, however, it was the challenge of balancing these elements and managing to create a uniquely calm and atmospheric home that was most rewarding.

“The goal was to accentuate imperfection and patina but at the same time, create a home that was warm and comfortable to live in. The mandate included a focus on wood, concrete, metal. A key challenge was how to blend the original plasterwork with the new venetian plasterwork. Anthony and the team delivered above expectations on all aspects of this mandate. They were a pleasure to work with.”
