Warner House No4

We completed the fourth in a series of loft refurbishments at a converted warehouse in Clerkenwell. This project focussed on lighting redesign to highlight the varied and tactile finishes throughout and acoustic performance, as both clients are musicians.

In such a raw space, we wanted to embrace the industrial aesthetic but ‘clean it up’ a bit. The more refined exposed services worked incredibly well with the bespoke acoustic treatment throughout the apartment, resulting in a finished project that is both incredibly functional and carefully crafted.

The lighting was designed for maximum flexibility in an ever changing open plan space. The bespoke suspended cable trays allowed the removal of all messy surface fixed services, while future proofing for additional services should the need arise. This system seems to float in the space, with hidden connections at the dropped concrete beams and up-lit concrete coffers that help celebrate the structure of the building. All spotlights are clamped to the trays, allowing change as artwork, furniture layouts and uses in the space evolve over time.

Quality of sound was key in these tall spaces with concrete ceilings, as was acoustic separation for the different instrumental practice spaces. The visibility of the acoustic treatments led us to consider bespoke solutions, with discreetly designed absorption panels on walls and within coffers and sound diffusing battens along the separating joinery wall. These features contribute to creating a comfortable living spaces that also serves as optimum acoustic environments.

Joinery and bespoke free-standing furniture is integrated throughout the home, playing a supporting role to the textured ceilings and unifying the spaces with a collection of minimal details and neutral dark tones, creating a calming environment throughout.

“We’re extremely satisfied with our flat refurbishment, as conducted by Resident and the contractor AKC. The outcome exceeded our expectations in a number of ways, both in terms of the engineering involved and the care and attention to the final look and finish. We’d thoroughly recommend Resident to anybody considering major works.”
