Located just steps from the Oval Cricket Ground, this 95-bedroom Travelodge hotel has now been successfully completed.
We were appointed at Stage 4 by Bennett Construction to take forward a planning-approved scheme originally developed by Rolfe Judd Architects.
Our involvement focused on Stage 5 delivery – developing detailed construction drawings and documentation to realise the project. Working closely with Bennett’s site team, we navigated complex detailing challenges and coordinated a broad consultant team to deliver a highly efficient, off-site-led build.
A key highlight of the project was the use of a light gauge steel frame (LGSF) system by MetStructures. This approach enabled the structural frame and external envelope to be manufactured off-site and assembled in a matter of weeks – significantly streamlining the construction timeline. The scheme also featured pre-fabricated bathroom pods, marking a first for us in this sector and paving the way for future modular opportunities.
The façade posed particular challenges, especially the deep wall build-ups resulting from the splayed window returns and stone banding. Coordinating these details in line with strict Travelodge brand guidelines required clear roles and close collaboration across the team.
Despite the complexities, the project progressed smoothly and has been delivered to a high standard. It was a truly collaborative effort between Bennett Construction, CS Consulting Engineers, MC Ashfield, MetStructures, ERS Consultants, Clement Acoustics, Anstey Horne, and Landscape Perspectives – all contributing to the successful delivery of a high-quality, BREEAM Excellent building that adds real value to the area.
