The Playhouse was founded in 1993 as a high quality accessible theatre providing opportunities for the best emerging Theatre Companies, Directors and Practitioners. The Playhouse is a Not for Profit organisation and uniquely the Theatre subsidies an innovative youth and community programme completely free to all participants. Furthermore, the playhouse works with local schools improving educational achievement and raising aspirations. All this is funded from audiences watching cutting edge Fringe Theatre.
There is no other theatre like it in London. Even Arts Council subsidised Theatres are unable to offer these sort of community benefits.
Resident have been offering property advice to Southwark Playhouse for the last 12 years. The Playhouse is currently located in Newington Causeway it’s third premises. Resident have given pro-bono architectural and property advice which has helped make these relocations a success.
The Playhouse is currently preparing for it’s move to a new permanent home in the Elephant and Castle and is fundraising for the £3m fit out. In addition the Playhouse will be moving back to the arches underneath London Bridge Station. After the double move the playhouse will have three Theatre spaces in two different locations. This will mean that they will be able to grow and increase the youth, community and Education offer.
Resident are proud of their association with the Theatre and will continue to work with them to help them navigate through what will be a very complex and difficult period.
